September book is Children of the Wild by Kevin Powers
"From the bestselling and award-winning author of The Yellow Birds comes a gorgeous, haunting love story set in the Virginia mountains and on the battlefields of World War I France. With the spare and exquisite prose and the profound insight that made The Yellow Birds a landmark work of American fiction, Kevin Powers illuminates the savage, complex, and timeless bonds of loyalty, honor, and heroism. Children of the Wild captures what it means to be human in times of loss—and how, even in darkness, the light of friendship and love endures. "

| Before It Was Called Santa Fe Style |
Sat Sep 12 |
Slide Show |
Chuck Wolfe |
Santa Fe is often described in visual shorthand: adobe or stucco walls, muted earth colors, and "Santa Fe Style. " But the City 's identity was taking shape long before the style gained a name. Drawing on his recent Santa Fe New Mexican essay, author, urbanist, and photographer Charles R. Wolfe will explore the deeper sources of a city 's character—in the case from the landscape and Indigenous and Hispanic traditions to the Salinas Pueblo Missions, streets, acequias, public life, and patterns of adaptation.
Using ideas and images from his three books—Urbanism Without Effort, Seeing the Better City and Sustaining a City 's Culture and Character—Wolfe will also show how to more generally read the "DNA " of cities: the inherited qualities, everyday practices and visual clues that make a place distinctive. He will also summarize his "Leveraging Place " approach, asking how Santa Fe can welcome change while preserving continuity, cultural memory and the qualities that make it more than a marketable style. |

Antonio Lopez |
The Lopez family set a large goal: visit all of the American National Parks before their son turned eighteen. Join them on the road trip of a lifetime as Antonio chronicles the challenges, the beauty, and the wonder of traveling across the most beautiful pieces of America.
From half marathons in Zion to snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas and chatting with marmots in the Grand Tetons, Antonio weaves together stories you won 't find in a guidebook.
Along the way, this small family from Santa Fe ties all of us to Mother Nature and reveals how their grand adventure changes the author 's view on everything from a dying mother, the COVID-19 Pandemic, God, and family.
National Parks is both a celebration of and a passionate case for the natural wonders that all Americans share.

Stephanie Gardner |
Join filmmaker and traveler Stephanie Gardner as she shares her adventure stories with historical context through the independent island-nation of Palau, in the Western Pacific. Stephanie spent a month exploring Palau while on break between filming her latest "Cinema Nomad " episodes.
What she discovered is a small island-chain with a friendly population and a fascinating history that includes indigenous Belauan cultures; to German-then-Spanish-then-Japanese-then American occupations, and road to its own independence as an island at the center of ecologically-minded advocacy. Palau has some of the best preserved coral reefs left on the planet and a rich marine life. In addition to a brief culture and history overview, Stephanie will focus some of her presentation on The Battle of Peleliu, one of the bloodiest and longest battles of WWII 's Pacific Theatre, which took place on one of 9 inhabited islands of Palau, Peleliu, an island that has a population of around 600 people, on land that is around 6 square miles.

This program will be a continuation of one given in late 2023. Rome is a seemingly endless cornucopia of historical and artistic wonders from all eras of Western civilization, so it is possible to keep finding major new treasures to experience. February continues to be an excellent month to visit Rome - no major holidays, off-season, and surprisingly pleasant weather with early blooming trees, bulbs blooming and the first shrubs bursting into bright color, along with outdoor cafés bustling with life. |
